New figures released by Visit Gloucester show that tourism contributes over £300 million to the local economy in Gloucester.
Tourists spent around £246 million in the city in 2023. Over a third of that was in Gloucester's shops and another third was in restaurants and cafes — with the overall economic impact reaching £310 million in total.
The city is currently ranked second in Gloucestershire for attracting day trippers and third for staycations, with iconic cultural landmarks like Gloucester Cathedral and the historic docks; unique stays like the LV14 SULA Lightship; shopping destination Gloucester Quays; and the city's wealth of independent restaurants, bars, breweries and cafes all contributing to its appeal.
Visit Gloucester hopes that the new Hotel Indigo opening at The Forum will increase the number of tourists coming to the city in 2025, as well as encouraging day trippers visiting for Gloucester Rugby matches, festivals or cultural events to stay overnight.
There are also plans to improve signage across the city in 2025, to help visitors find their way around and discover new landmarks like The Forum and the University of Gloucestershire's new campus.
Councillor Caroline Courtney, cabinet member for culture and leisure at Gloucester City Council, said: 'Tourism plays a vital role in our local economy and these impressive figures underline just how essential it is to our city’s prosperity.
'We are dedicated to making Gloucester an even more attractive destination by supporting local businesses, investing in a vibrant events programme and backing exciting projects like the Food Dock, which all contribute to an exceptional experience for both visitors and residents.'
