First look: Inside the Cotswolds' hotly anticipated new hotel

THE PIG in the Cotswolds is one of the most anticipated new hotels to open in Gloucestershire in 2024. SoGlos takes a look at the stylish makeover of the former Barnsley House Hotel near Cirencester that's just opened its doors this September 2024.

THE PIG hotels have a loyal following, from humble beginnings along the south coast, the brand has grown to nine hotels, with two new openings planned in Stratford-upon-Avon and Tunbridge Wells over the next two years.

Its Cotswolds hotel in Barnsley, near Cirencester, is the newest addition to the litter — opening its doors this September 2024.

SoGlos popped along to take a look at the results of the major makeover that's been unfolding over the last six months.

What's the vibe at THE PIG?

THE PIG in the Cotswolds is beautiful and reasonably small. With 20 bedrooms, plus six more up the road at its first ever village pub, it will add four more bedrooms this October 2024.

The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, staff are passionate and enthusiastic and keen to share their knowledge and expertise — from wine recommendations to cool independent brands of spirits that you might not have come across before.

The 17th century hotel feels like home and as if it's always been THE PIG, which is a real achievement for a new opening.

What are THE PIG's bedrooms like?

The bedrooms are characterful and charming, ranging in size from super cosy to an entire three bedroom cottage. They're stocked with bespoke THE PIG toiletries and thoughtful touches of hardback books to browse as well as an array of magazines.

Because Judy Hutson, wife of owner Robin Hutson, shops around for accessories from vintage stores, every decorative item is pre-owned and it lends the bedrooms an incredibly homely and well-established feel. It creates a sense of staying at a guest house rather than a hotel.

What is the restaurant like at THE PIG?

Arguably the star of the show, the restaurant has been transformed into a celebration of nature. Beautifully designed with pops of colourful glassware alongside wooden trays overflowing with vibrant herbs around the edge, it's an uplifting, light and airy space that has plenty of interesting art and ceramics to catch the eye.

The menu draws on a host of independent producers within a 25-mile radius of the hotel that are showcased in a creative range of dishes. Bread is freshly baked at Lynwood & Co and meat comes from local butcher Jesse Smith.

Is THE PIG's bar worth a trip?

It's super small but packs a mighty punch with a huge window transformed into a vibrant artistic display of glassware. It creates a mesmerising and stunning backdrop that makes a cocktail or two feel like a special experience.

If you're staying for a few nights, the hotel's The Village Pub up the road offers a cosy and down-to-earth spot to enjoy a pint beside the fire or one of the toasty log burners.

What are THE PIG's hotel grounds like?

The Arts and Crafts style garden is Grade II listed. Designed by the late great Rosemary Verey, it offers a serene haven of tranquillity and beauty.

An expanse of lawn has a gothic temple in one corner and a pool and regency style temple sits in another corner, both acting as charming points of interest.

Tree lined pathways take guests on a curious journey of discovery and the kitchen garden is immaculately cared for. Pens of clucking hens add to the rural charm.

Is the spa at THE PIG worth a visit?

Small but perfectly formed, the spa named Fieldhouse, overlooks rolling fields and is tucked away behind a bank of trees.

Friendly staff make you feel right at home and the peaceful relaxation room is nature themed, with six colourful recliners circling around a potted palm. The spa has treatment rooms, a sauna and a sunny outdoor terrace with a small plunge pool too.

What's the SoGlos verdict?

THE PIG in the Cotswolds is a glorious addition to Gloucestershire hospitality.

Its down-to-earth charm and beautiful aesthetics, along with knowledgeable and charming staff, make it a place you want to linger. A Cotswolds gem to add to the top of the 'must visit' list!
