SoGlos’s Charity of the Year, Gloucestershire-based Hope For Tomorrow, is launching an urgent COVID-19 appeal to help it provide mobile cancer care for patients across the county during the Coronavirus lockdown.
Hope For Tomorrow supports the NHS by providing mobile cancer care units, which deliver vital treatment to cancer patients close to their homes, removing the need for them to travel.
With the government’s current social distancing measures in place, people at higher risk, like those with compromised immune systems due to cancer, are being urged to stay at home to minimise the risk of infection from Coronavirus.
The charity receives no government funding and is already feeling the strain as fundraising events are being cancelled. The new appeal hopes to raise £59,400 in order to keep the entire fleet of mobile cancer care units on the road during April, so cancer patients in Gloucestershire can still receive treatment without having to go to hospital.
Hope For Tomorrow Chair Dr Sean Elyan said: ‘Our approach of delivering cancer care closer to patients home has never been more important than now, sparing patients and their families trips to hospital which could put them at risk.
‘We are living through unprecedented times and this new virus poses a huge risk to already vulnerable cancer patients during their treatment.
‘In response to the current crisis, we have set up an Emergency Appeal to ensure our charity can continue the essential service we provide with the NHS Trusts.’
