Cheltenham commercial design group shares secrets to its 30-plus years of growth and success

A homegrown family business founded over 30 years ago, this Cheltenham firm went from humble beginnings as an office outfitter with a husband-and-wife team, to a multi-brand group with a portfolio boasting some of the county's most prestigious business addresses.

Jessop House, Festival House, Hartpury University and Hartpury College and the Brewery Quarter are just some of Gloucestershire's most prominent business addresses — and they all have one thing in common... each has been kitted out by Workplace Interiors Co, a family-run business that has been designing stunning office interiors for the last 30 years.

Founded in 1993 in Shurdington, Workplace Interiors Co started out as a local contracting firm called Contract Interior Systems (CIS) with husband-and-wife founders Gary and Sarah Hough at the helm.

Fast forward to 2024 and the company now has 60 employees and encompasses a dynamic group of brands that specialise in providing complete workplace solutions.

Its signature interiors are found in the likes of some hugely successful commercial projects in Cheltenham, such as the Clockwise offices at Festival House, Jessop House, Montpellier Legal's flagship offices in the Brewery Quarter and Red Savannah in Eagle Tower, not to mention its hundreds of installations across the rest of the county and the UK.

In its initial iteration, CIS had 17 successful years creating commercial interior spaces for businesses in the county. Then, in 2010, the team noticed a gap in the market for high-quality suspended ceiling tiles — Ceiling Tiles UK was founded and is now the UK's leading online distributor of ceiling tiles.

The creation of this company led to a period of rapid expansion, with five more commercial interiors companies launched over five years, from 2018 to 2023, including the brand name for the umbrella group of the company — Workplace Interiors Co.

The group now consists of CIS, Ceiling Tiles UK, Glass Partitioning UK, Steel Partitioning UK, Gravity Office Interiors, Search Station, Workplace Interior Shop and Lake & Co Flooring, all offering complete workplace solutions under one roof.

And if that wasn't enough, in 2023, the company was certified as a Great Place to Work alongside celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Director of Workplace Interiors Co, Ben, says: 'We’re a family-founded business and our team is an extension of that. The contributions of our close-knit team have been pivotal to the achievements of Workplace Interiors Co, shaping it into the successful group we are today.

'It’s incredible to think we’ve come such a long way in the last 30 years. It’s been an exceptional journey across three decades, and we’re not showing any signs of slowing down.'
