Work on the Gloucester city centre phase of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine begins this March 2025.

Work on the next phase of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine is getting underway, with construction work on the Gloucester city centre section of the project starting this March 2025.

The 2km-long Gloucester leg of the project will connect the city to the B4063 Gloucester to Cheltenham section of the Cycle Spine at London Road, as well as improving cycling infrastructure through the city centre and south to Gloucester Docks, with construction work starting on Monday 10 March 2025.

Works on Northgate and Southgate Street — from Parliament Street to The Tall Ship Pub — are being undertaken by contractors Montel Civil Engineering and are expected to be completed in late autumn 2025.

On Northgate Street, the works include reducing the speed limit to 20mph; improving visibility and giving pedestrians priority at key junctions; reallocating parking spaces and improving Disabled spaces to meet current standards; and converting the Worcester Street roundabout to a standard junction to 'streamline traffic flow'.

While on Southgate Street, works include improving the footway surface, segregating the cycleway and creating an improved crossing point at Kimbrose Triangle.

There are also works due to start in late spring on the Llanthony Access Road between Sudmeadow Road and Hemmingsdale Road, to complete the Gloucester South West Bypass project.

When completed, the ambitious Gloucestershire Cycle Spine project will connect Bishop's Cleeve to Stroud via Gloucester and Cheltenham, providing a safer and more sustainable transport route across the county and supporting Gloucestershire County Council's commitment to become carbon net zero by 2045.

Gloucestershire County Council is hosting a 'meet the contractor' event on Wednesday 5 March 2025, where members of the community can meet the project team, see the schedule of work and ask questions.

Cabinet member for environment, economy and planning, councillor David Gray, said: 'This section through Gloucester city centre is an essential part of the 26-mile cycle spine we’re building across the county. It will significantly improve walking and cycling options for people, which will help to reduce carbon emissions and encourage active travel.

'I would encourage anyone interested in finding out more to attend the meet the contractor event, as it’s a great opportunity to ask questions and meet the project team.'

'Meet the contractor' takes place from 10am until 6pm at St John's Lane Northgate Methodist Church, before work commences on Monday 10 March 2025.
