There was immense calls for celebration this weekend as Bishop's Cleeve FC stormed to a historic win in the Emirates FA Cup — beating a semi-professional side that plays three levels above them.
Hopes were high in preparation for the big match that would see either side be knocked out of the tournament, with club manager, Paul Collicutt promoting the game around the village to encourage supporters to attend.
It worked, as more than 1,300 fans descended upon the grounds of Kayte Lane Stadium for the second qualifying round of the tournament — and those in attendance, as part of the biggest crowd ever seen at the grounds, witnessed history.
Cleeve started strong with a goal in the 10th minute, with the opposition wasting opportunities and giving away free kicks.
Finishing with a three goal victory in the 70th minute, it was all over for Torquay whose manager claimed his team were 'embarrassing', telling BBC Radio Devon that he was 'humiliated'.
But it was all smiles for Bishop's Cleeve FC as they move on in their pursuit to glory, with this being a major achievement in the club's 119-year history.
All eyes will be on the third round matches, as Cleeve faces Chesham United on Saturday 28 September 2024.
