Gloucester Cathedral is getting a boost in funding to support inclusive activities for the community, thanks to The Barnwood Trust.
The Cheltenham-based charitable foundation has awarded Gloucester Cathedral a grant of £9,751.80 to support the running of its weekly Walking Rugby and Gardening for Wellbeing activities.
Gloucester Cathedral is committed to making a positive contribution to the local community and offers a number of inclusive and accessible activities, where local people can make friends and give their wellbeing a much-needed boost — with opportunities for those with physical disabilities and mental health conditions to join in, too.
Walking Rugby is a slower-paced, lighter-touch version of rugby designed to be more accessible for those recovering from injuries or with disabilities — with the cathedral offering two separate groups, one for those with limited mobility or mild disabilities; and one designed for wheelchair users and those with more severe physical disabilities.
While Gardening for Wellbeing gives participants the chance to boost their health and wellbeing while growing their gardening knowledge at the same time, all in a relaxed, calming environment.
Helping to maintain the cathedral's grounds and green spaces, activities include tending flower beds, planting bulbs and building wheelchair-accessible planters, so everyone can enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Director of learning and participation at Gloucester Cathedral, Canon Rebecca Lloyd, said: 'We are extremely grateful to Barnwood Trust for their invaluable support of our Gardening for Wellbeing and Walking Rugby programmes.
'These tried and tested activities are greatly valued by our local community, providing healthy outdoor opportunities that boost physical and mental wellbeing. The Gardening for Wellbeing group does a fantastic job maintaining our cathedral’s beautiful green spaces, which so many people enjoy.
'We are always looking for more people to join these friendly and inclusive groups, so do come along if it’s something you think you’d enjoy — everyone’s welcome.'
Walking Rugby takes place at Gloucester Cathedral every Monday at 9.30am, while Gardening for Wellbeing takes place on Wednesdays at 10.30am.
