Gloucestershire pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the county of Gloucestershire has come together to pay tribute to the country's longest reigning monarch.

After her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral in Scotland on Thursday 8 September 2022, surrounded by her family.

Gloucestershire is paying tribute to Her Majesty in a number of ways, from tolling bells to fireworks displays - with SoGlos sharing how you can get involved and pay your respects.

Sign the book of condolence at Gloucester Cathedral

To mourn the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Gloucester Cathedral is commemorating The Queen's life in a number of ways - including hosting a book of condolence for visitors to sign. 

The Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester, said: 'It is with deep sadness that we hear the news of The Queen’s death. As our sense of loss ripples out across the nation, Commonwealth and world, we give thanks for a life well lived. Whether we met her in person, saw her from a distance, or simply encountered her in our homes in newspapers, on the radio or on screen, we knew her as our Queen. We also knew that her leadership and dedication to her people was rooted in her Christian faith.'

Sign the book of condolence at Tewkesbury Abbey

Tewkesbury Abbey has a book of condolence available in its Lady Chapel, with mourners asked to leave any floral tributes against the wall of the Abbey to the right of the main entrance. It is also flying its flag at half-mast, as a mark of respect. 

Bishop of Tewkesbury​, The Right Reverend Robert Springett, said: 'I join with Bishop Rachel (Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester) in giving thanks for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s long and devoted service to this country, the Commonwealth and the wider world. This service was always underpinned by her Christian faith and it is in that faith that we commend her into God’s keeping and pray for comfort for the members of the Royal family as they lead the nation in mourning.'

Sign books of condolence in Cheltenham

The Municipal Offices are flying the flag at half-mast, an area of pavement in front of the Long Gardens has been made available for residents to lay floral tributes and there will be books of condolence to sign inside the Municipal Offices, as well as at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum and Pittville Pump Room

Cheltenham's mayor, councillor Sandra Holliday, expressed her 'great sadness' following the announcement of the death of Her Majesty The Queen, saying: 'Councillors and officers of Cheltenham Borough Council are deeply saddened at the news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time.'

Sign books of condolence in Gloucester

Gloucester City Council has a book of condolence available for residents to pay their respects to Her Majesty at the Museum of Gloucester, while Gloucestershire County Council's book of condolence is available at the reception of Shire Hall. 

Mayor of Gloucester, councillor Howard Hyman, and leader of Gloucester City Council, Richard Cook, released a joint statement, saying: 'On behalf of all councillors and staff of Gloucester City Council, and all the residents of Gloucester, we would like to express how sad we all are at the news of Her Majesty The Queen's death. We send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family.

'Gloucester's connection to the Royal Family is very special and historic, and Her Majesty visited the city a number of times during her reign. On each occasion her warmth toward the people of Gloucester, and vice versa, was clear and wholly felt.

'As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, flags on all city council buildings are being flown at half-mast.'

Sign books of condolence in Stroud, Dursley and Wotton-under-Edge

Stroud District Council has opened three books of condolence in remembrance of Her Majesty The Queen, with flags flying at half-mast on all council buildings. It has also made a dedicated space in Stratford Park for residents to lay floral tributes to Her Royal Highness.

Chair of Stroud District Council, councillor Steve Robinson, said: 'Her Majesty's connection with the Stroud district dates back to when she was a Princess, and people across the district have always held her in the highest respect and admiration. Her service to our nation and the Commonwealth has been historic and unmatched. Her passing will be felt very keenly across the district and residents will understandably wish to pay their respects.'

Take a moment to reflect in the county's forests

As the country mourns the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Forestry England is keeping forests across the UK - including Westonbirt Arboretum and its Forestry England Forest of Dean sites - open during the period of national mourning, to 'provide a place for reflection and wellbeing.'

Forestry England has also offered its condolences to the Royal Family.

Sign books of condolence in the Cotswolds

Cotswold District Council has books of condolence for Queen Elizabeth II at council offices in Cirencester, Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden and Tetbury, as well as in the Moreton Area Centre in Moreton-in-Marsh. Council buildings are also flying their flags at half-mast. 

Residents can lay floral tributes at Cirencester Parish Church at on the cobbles by the war memorial at St John the Baptist in Cirencester in memory of Her Majesty. 

Giffords Circus will play the National Anthem before its performances 

During the period of national mourning, Giffords Circus will play the National Anthem before all of its performances, as a mark of respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Shows are set to continue as normal, with the exception of the day of The Queen's funeral - with Giffords cancelling its Cirencester show on Monday 19 September 2022 as a mark of respect. 

Gloucester History Festival talks are being postponed

Gloucester History Festival has announced that its King's Talks, which were due to start on Saturday 10 September 2022, and its Blackfriars Talks which were due to start this week, are being postponed following the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Sign books of condolence in the Forest of Dean

Forest of Dean District Council has books of condolence at its town council offices in Coleford and Cinderford, as well as at St Mary's Church in Newent, while Lydney Town Council has a digital book of condolence on its website.

Residents can leave floral tributes to Her Majesty at the clock tower in Coleford. 

Venues and attractions across Gloucestershire are closing for The Queen's funeral

With Her Majesty's funeral taking place on Monday 19 September 2022, which has been declared a bank holiday, many venues, businesses and attractions across the county are closing as a mark of respect.

Sudeley Castle, Cotswold Farm Park, Berkeley Castle, New Brewery ArtsBatsford ArboretumSlimbridge Wetland CentreMr Mulligan's at The Brewery Quarter and The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum are among the Gloucestershire venues that will be closed to mark The Queen's funeral. 

Cheltenham Town Hall and Pittville Pump Room will observe a minute's silence before performances

While events at Cheltenham Town Hall and Pittville Pump Room are scheduled to go ahead during the period of national mourning, it will dim the auditorium lights and observe a minute's silence before the start of each show - with details of any changes to its schedule due to The Queen's state funeral to be announced as soon as information is available. 

Sign the book of condolence at Cotswold Wildlife Park

There is a book of condolence in the Manor House at Cotswold Wildlife Park in Burford, which is remaining open to visitors during the period of national mourning, excluding the day of The Queen's state funeral on Monday 19 September 2022. 

Managing director of Cotswold Wildlife Park, Reggie Heyworth, said: 'I'm sure that all the staff at Cotswold Wildlife Park share my deep sense of loss at the sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is a very profound moment for us all and we will always remember this day.'

Daylesford Organic is postponing its Harvest Festival

Originally due to take place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September 2022, Daylesford Organic has made the decision to reschedule its Harvest Festival, out of respect for The Queen and the period of national mourning. 

The new date is yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed that the event will take place in spring 2023. All tickets purchased so far will be automatically transferred to the new date, with anyone who can't make it able to request a refund.

Visit The Queen's Green Canopy Tree in Colesbourne Park

As part of The Queen's Green Canopy initiative, a tree in Colesbourne Park was specially selected to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee year, making it one of 70 ancient trees chosen in honour of her 70-year reign. 

A special plaque to mark the tree will be unveiled on Tuesday 13 September 2022, with visitors able to find it using the what2words location 'brotherly.twirls.newsstand', for a moment of quiet reflection.

Lay flowers and tributes at Highgrove House

Residents have been placing floral tributes to The Queen and messages of condolence at the gates of Highgrove House, the family home of the new King Charles III, near Tetbury.

Service of thanksgiving and candlelit vigil for The Queen at Coleford Clock Tower

Mourners in the Forest of Dean are invited to gather at Coleford Clock Tower at 7pm on Sunday 18 September 2022, as the Mayor of Coleford leads a service of thanksgiving and candlelit vigil in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The service will include readings, hymns and prayers and will conclude at 7.45pm, giving people the chance to travel home before the National Moment of Reflection, which is planned for 8pm. People are welcome to stay at the clock tower to observe the national one minute silence.

Gloucester Cathedral is holding a service of commemoration for The Queen

Gloucester Cathedral is hosting a special service of commemoration and thanksgiving for the life of our late Queen on Sunday 18 September 2022 at 3pm. 

Providing a time for prayer and reflection, as well as an opportunity to give thanks for Queen Elizabeth II's life of service and dedication to her country and its people, the service will bring Gloucestershire residents together on the eve of Her Majesty's state funeral. 

The service is open to all members of the public and free to attend, but tickets must be booked via Gloucester Cathedral's website. 

It will also be livestreamed on the Cathedral's website, YouTube channel and Facebook page, for anyone that can't make it in person.

Tewkesbury Abbey is holding a service of reflection and thanksgiving for The Queen

Mourners will have the opportunity to gather at Tewkesbury Abbey on Sunday 18 September 2022 for a service of reflection and thanksgiving for the life of Queen Elizabeth II, starting at 5pm.

The Mayor of Cheltenham is leading a Moment of Reflection for The Queen

A brief vigil is being held outside the Municipal Office in Cheltenham on Sunday 18 September 2022, inviting residents to come together to mourn Her Majesty and reflect on her life and legacy during the National Moment of Reflection.

Led by Cheltenham's Mayor, Councillor Sandra Holliday, the vigil will start at 8pm with the national one-minute silence, before concluding with the National Anthem, led by the Everyman Theatre's EveryVoice Choir.
