Adding to his portfolio of Cotswold hotels, restaurants and bars, The George Hotel in Cheltenham has been purchased by Julian Dunkerton, owner of The Lucky Onion Group and founder of fashion brand Superdry.
The large grade II hotel, which was closed in July 2018, contains 31 bedrooms and dates back to 1840. Formerly a row of five converted townhouses, the hotel could become the latest property to be redeveloped as part of The Lucky Onion portfolio, which also includes The Tavern, The Wild Duck, "The Wheatsheaf Inn": https://www.soglos.com/drink/30678/The-Wheatsheaf-Inn, No. 131 and No. 38 The Park.
The hotel was sold by Christie and Co, which acted on behalf of the former owner, Cotswold Inns and Hotels.
Matthew Smith, director at Christie & Co’s Bristol office said: ‘The George Hotel represented a rare opportunity to purchase a hotel business in Central Cheltenham, one of the UK’s most desirable towns. Having carried out a comprehensive marketing campaign, multiple offers were received from property developers, hoteliers and overseas investors.’
