The Coconut Tree has created a traditional Vesak Dansal plate to celebrate the Sri Lankan holiday — and diners can try it for free this May 2023.

SGGLA Restaurant of the Year, The Coconut Tree in Cheltenham, is giving away FREE food this May 2023 to celebrate the Sri Lankan holiday of Vesak.

The religious festival is widely celebrated in Sri Lanka on the first full moon in May, when locals come out in their thousands for a week-long event which includes bright lights, music and sumptuous food shared with friends and family.

Bringing the festivities to Cheltenham on Thursday 4 May 2023, The Coconut Tree is giving diners a chance to try a traditional Vesak Dansal plate — named after the Sri Lankan food stalls that offer free meals to the community during Vesak.

The special plate offers a traditional mix of Sri Lanka’s favourite dishes, including brinjal moju (pickled aubergine); coconut sambol; parippu dhal; Sri-tato roast potatoes; and yellow rice with raisins — with all dishes also being vegan and gluten-free, so everyone can enjoy the meal together.

The Coconut Tree co-founder, Rashintha Rodrigo, said: 'We are excited to celebrate Vesak with our customers and bring a slice of Sri Lankan culture to the UK.

'It is traditional for Dansal, roadside stalls, to serve food free of charge during the Vesak festival. We are delighted to share this tradition with our customers. We look forward to seeing everyone on the day and celebrating this special occasion together.'

The restaurant is opening for walk-ins only from 12pm to 3.30pm on Thursday 4 May 2023, with normal dinner service resuming in the evening.

Alongside the free Vesak special, the standard menu and its famous Cocotails will also be available, with firm favourites like hoppers and kotthu not to be missed.
