The south west's go-to restaurant guide for diners 'who only want the best', the Trencherman's Guide, has included three highly regarded Gloucestershire restaurants in its 2024 edition.
Tewkesbury Park, The Greenway Hotel and The Woolpack Inn are Gloucestershire's representatives in the 32nd edition of the prestigious dining guide, with all three featuring for the first time this year.
Described by celebrity chef and restaurateur Rick Stein as 'a guide with teeth', the Trencherman's Guide — established in 1992 — picks out the best fine dining restaurants, pubs and hotels across the south west, with strict criteria that must be met in order to be included.
Establishments can't buy their way into the guide, but are invited to be members based on points achieved in a stringent scoring system — determined by ratings from The Good Food Guide, AA and Michelin — or by having been visited and scored on a long list of criteria by an experienced food writer.
Trencherman's describes the restaurant of luxury hotel and golf resort Tewkesbury Park, Mint, as offering a 'precisely plated' fusion of local and asian flavours, under the leadership of passionate executive chef, Anuj Thakur.
Tewkesbury Park marketing and PR specialist, Sara McGovern, said: 'We are
hugely excited to be featured into such a prestigious guide — it’s a huge
testament to the skills of our team and the quality of what we offer here at
Tewkesbury Park.
'We remain a hidden gem, so it’s great to have platforms such as Trencherman’s to spread the word! We are in a stunning location, set in 164 acres of private parkland and as well as our resort, the food is exceptional.'
Sara says the restaurant's six-course tasting menu with optional matching wine flight is proving 'a great success', with Trencherman's picking out dishes like spiced Gressingham duck with rich confit-leg tart and sweet rolled golden beetroot as an example of Anuj's 'mastery of texture and flavour'.
Also featured was the three AA Rosette Garden Room restaurant at Cheltenham's The Greenway Hotel — which Trencherman's described as offering 'intricate dining in a tranquil setting', with its views of a sunken garden and ornate lily pond and an à la carte menu dealing in 'modern British classics with the occasional European twist', like cod and herb terrine with homemade penne, mussels, parsley velour and sea herb.
While rustic and homely country pub, The Woolpack Inn in Slad — famous as the preferred watering hole of legendary local novelist Laurie Lee — is labelled a 'fashionable favourite' by Trencherman's, which highlights British classics from head chef Adam Glover including beef and Guinness pie with winter greens, alongside its Mediterranean-inspired fare like chalkstream trout en papillote.
