Cheltenham’s Bavarian bar will close in July 2019, as it plans to rebrand under new management, despite only announcing its reopening in SoGlos’s exclusive news article back in August 2018.
SoGlos has discovered that the bar, which is now owned by pub company, Stonegate, is set to close with a weekend of special events on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July 2019, before refurbishment works begin to turn the pub into a stylish and modern bar and restaurant, which will reopen in late August 2019.
Plans were submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council’s planning teams on Tuesday 2 July 2019 to replace the Bierkeller’s signage and rebrand as ‘The Miller’, which, according to initial plans, will serve craft beer, cider and burgers, and show live sport. A decision will be made on the application before Wednesday 28 August 2019.
A spokesperson for Stonegate Pub Company said: ‘We acquired The Bierkeller from Bar Fever Limited earlier this year and plan to make a significant investment into the bar. It will be refurbished and re-positioned as a modern, laid-back pub aimed primarily at students and millennials in the area.
‘With the new-look, comes a new name, The Miller, named after Golden Miller, the most successful Cheltenham Gold Cup Horse ever, and the pub will be transformed into a relaxed, modern space packed with essentials such as free WiFi, charging points for phones and laptops, printing services and a number of HD TVs showing Sky sports. It is due to re-open in late August and will create a number of job opportunities.’
Stonegate also owns Slug & Lettuce, Yates and Walkabout Bar, along with a chain known as The Common Room, which could be the theme of the revamped Bierkeller if plans to become ‘The Miller’ get the go ahead.
SoGlos has been told that staff will not lose their jobs as part of the refurbishment, and the new venue will be an exciting addition to the town.
