Gloucester’s popular independent screening room, Sherborne Cinema, says that screening Peter Rabbit during the Easter holidays has resulted in its busiest two weeks in the cinema’s history.
Mark Cunningham, owner and manager of Sherborne Cinema told SoGlos: ‘I suppose you can have too much of a good thing! We’ve been selling out during our daytime screenings and having to turn customers away every day.
‘We’ve tried to fit in extra wooden chairs where we can, because some people have travelled more than 40 minutes to get to us, and you don’t want to let people down.’
The independent art-deco cinema has 141 seats but does not take advanced bookings. Customers have been advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before the films start in order to guarantee a seat. Although, as Mr Cunningham has experienced during this Easter break, that sometimes isn’t quite enough time.
He went on to say: ‘Peter Rabbit is such a popular film, normally we sell out during the holidays but having to turn people away has meant this is a record-breaking film for us in terms of popularity.
‘Usually we get one very popular film each year. Last year it was Sing and in 2016 it was The BFG. But I think Gloucester’s connection to Beatrix Potter probably also helps when it comes to Peter Rabbit; it really is a film for the whole family, I’m pleased so many have been able to watch it at the Sherborne Cinema.’
