When summer hits, parents all over Gloucestershire ask the same question: ‘where is the nearest splash pad?!’ But rather than having to travel across the border to Gheluvelt Park in Worcester or Abbey Park in Evesham, there will soon be an option much closer to home.
As part of a £2.5m redevelopment, work will begin on Monday 26 February 2018 at Leisure at Cheltenham to create an aquatic play area, as well as upgrading its changing spaces and reception area.
In addition to the splash zone, the leisure centre’s fitness suite will be extended with two new exercise studios and new cardio equipment being installed.
£330,000 of funding has been contributed by Sport England towards the swimming facilities as part of its Swim Local programme.
The Cheltenham Trust’s chief executive, Julie Finch, said: ‘We’re very excited to see the project actually come to life after a significant amount of planning.
‘As a not for profit organisation, we can continue to reinvest money back into our sites across Cheltenham, continually improving the customer experience and offering the best in health and fitness space and equipment. We were particularly keen to ensure that any of our customers who have special needs are properly catered for, which has resulted in a number of key re-design features.’
All the work is due to be completed by summer 2018, ready for an opening date of Wednesday 1 August 2018.
