For the first time in its history, Malvern St James Girls' School will start accepting boys from September 2025, changing its name to Malvern St James School.
The independent school in Malvern, which is a popular choice for Gloucestershire parents, has announced it will welcome boys aged three to 18 across its prep and secondary schools in the new academic year.
The school says it's keen to extend its leading academic and co-curricular opportunities to boys, with its commitment to excellence in teaching and pastoral care recognised by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
The change comes after Malvern St James joined the China-founded Galaxy Global Education Group (GGEG) in February 2025. The decision to accept boys also aligns it with the other co-educational schools in the group, with Malvern St James also suggesting it will ensure its future security within the private school market, in a global society that favours co-education.
Headmaster Dr Gareth Lloyd said: 'I want to assure you that this transition is rooted in an educational philosophy that embraces inclusion, respect and preparation for life beyond MSJ.
'We believe that welcoming boys to MSJ will enrich the learning environment, broaden perspectives and provide every student with an even stronger foundation for success beyond school.'
As it prepares to welcome its first ever male students, Malvern St James is reviewing its approach to the classroom environment and co-curricular activities programme, while assessing its facilities to ensure they are welcoming and accommodating for boys — but assures parents it will stay true to its core values.
