To celebrate the grand reopening of Kings Square, Gloucester City Council is hosting a day packed with family-friendly events on Saturday 30 April 2022.
Also marking 50 years since the first opening of the square, the daytime launch event will start at 1pm with a ribbon cutting by the Mayor of Gloucester, feature live performances, lighting displays from and free circus skills activities for children and young people, plus a new show from hip-hop contemporary dance group, Avant Garde, from 1.30pm, merging dance with virtual reality.
From 6.30pm, guests can see a collaboration between Strike a Light and Avant Garde, who have worked with 125 dancers across Gloucester on a brilliant new performance.
And to conclude the celebrations, from 8.15pm, a show called ‘Wave at the Moon’ has been created for the launch in collaboration with Cirque Bijou and the Bullzini High Wire Company – with the performance featuring a high wire walker, aerialists and musicians.
The £5 million newly revamped design – which is based on the Severn Bore – features granite seating areas, coloured lighting and aims to make Kings Square an ideal location for events to be held.
Central to the new design was the return of the water fountains, as well as the introduction of more greenery and flower beds.
Councillor Richard Cook, leader of Gloucester City Council, said: ‘We are incredibly excited to show our residents and visitors what is possible with the new square’s design which we developed with the help of our residents.
As the rest of the Kings Quarter takes shape with the development of the hugely ambitious digital quarter bringing new businesses, bars and restaurants and a four-star hotel, we know the square is going to become a hive of activity and a new destination for Gloucester’.
