Discover free summer holiday events in Cheltenham at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum, including a craft workshop where children can build their own minature worlds.

The summer holidays are in full swing and, if you're stuck for ideas of things to do with the kids, this buzzing Cheltenham attraction has a programme of free events happening in August 2024.

The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum is not only exhibiting famous works from the Radev collection, including two real Picasso paintings, and hosting a free immersive theatre experience called Play! House this summer — it's also running free workshops and community events for children and families.

As part of the Play! House exhibition, which encourages collaborative play through roleplay and interactive artworks, the Building New Worlds workshop gives crafty kids the chance to create their own theatre-inspired, small model scene.

Taking place on Tuesday 13 August 2024, from 11am to 1pm, this drop-off session invites children to re-imagine stories from Cheltenham's past, using local and sustainable art materials, archival images and even plants to construct their own miniature 3D stage set.

It's ideal for youngsters aged eight to 14-years-old — particularly those with an interest in theatre, costume, design and crafting — and free to attend. Just email learning@cheltenhamtrust.org.uk to secure your spot.

Then, on Saturday 17 August 2024, everyone is welcome to join The Wilson's Family Inclusivity Day — a community-focused day of free activities and creative workshops for all ages and abilities.

From 11am to 3pm, discover diverse events and listen to inspirational stories, with book readings from LGBTQ+ children's author, Bob Tregoning, lined up.

Free to attend with no need to book, this special day promises to create an inclusive environment which fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance, for children to learn empathy, understanding and appreciation for diversity within their community and beyond.

For older children and artistic adults, The Wilson's artist-led evening event, Wilson Nights, takes place on Wednesday 7 August 2024 — with free lively performances and arty workshops from 6pm to 9pm.

Events include a therapeutic Batik colouring session in the cafe, soundtracked by noises from the rainforest; a creative writing workshop that takes inspiration from the chemical elements of the periodic table; a folk-themed life drawing session; and improvised dancing taster workshop, which explores the medium of contact improvisation.
