Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley are joining the cast for the Barn Theatre’s digital production of The Picture of Dorian Grey, being streamed online from Tuesday 16 to Wednesday 31 March 2021.
The digital production will see Stephen Fry play The Interviewer while Joanna Lumley takes on the role of Lady Narborough – alongside Dunkirk star Fionn Whitehead as Dorian Grey and Russell Tovey as Basil Hallward.
This contemporary version of Oscar Wilde’s beloved story – written by Henry Filloux-Bennett – portrays Dorian Grey as a selfie-obsessed social media influencer in a world of Instagram, Facebook and dating apps.
The digital production will draw on techniques from radio plays and film documentaries, as well as traditional theatre.
Director, Tamara Harvey, said: ‘When trying to tell stories in Covid times, with very few resources and almost no time, the thing you need from your cast more even than talent is a spirit of collaboration, combined with patience, kindness and large doses of humour.
‘Every member of our cast for Dorian Gray brought that and more. They are not only ridiculously talented but also – perhaps even more importantly – they’re all genuinely lovely people, which has made the making of this piece a joy.’
The Picture of Dorian Grey is co-produced by the Barn Theatre, Lawrence Batley Theatre, New Wolsey Theatre, Oxford Playhouse and Theatre Clwyd.
Tickets cost £12 for access to a screening link which will be active for 48 hours from the ticket-holders chosen performance date.
