Sir Ian McKellen is bringing his latest solo show to Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre, with profits being donated to the theatre’s Education and Outreach Department.
The 80-date show will tour the country from January 2019, with the world-famous actor donating proceeds from each performance to worthy arts causes based at each venue.
The actor, best known for his roles as Magneto in the X-Men films, and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, will bring his new show to the Everyman on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 May 2019.
Tickets will be ‘accessibly priced’ and will be available to purchase from the Everyman Theatre’s box office from 9.30am on Saturday 10 November 2018.
Speaking about the show, Ian McKellen said: ‘The show starts with Gandalf and will probably end with an invitation to act with me on stage. In between there will be anecdotes and acting. I open at my local arts centre in January and end up by August in Orkney.
‘Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions.
‘Sean Mathias, the director and I have worked together for stage and screen, many happy times. I’m glad to be making my debut at the renowned Everyman in support of the Education and Community Outreach Department.’
The Everyman’s chief executive, Mark Goucher said: ‘It’s remarkably generous of Ian to deliver these shows. All proceeds from the two nights will be donated to our education and community team who will provide bursaries for young people in Cheltenham and across the county, to enable them to access our youth theatre groups, workshops and join our choirs.’
