The inaugural Gloucester Independent Film Festival is hosting the south west premiere of a new film by Oscar-winning Gloucestershire filmmaker, Tom Berkeley.

Taking place at Gloucester Guildhall on Saturday 5 October 2024, his latest short film The Golden West — co-written and directed with long-time collaborator Ross White — headlines the event.

The pair will be attending the event in person and hosting a Q&A after the screening.

Set in 1849, The Golden West tells the story of two feuding sisters who flee famine in Ireland to seek their fortunes during the gold rush in America, with potentially deadly consequences.

The film has already received a string of awards, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Film at Raindance Film Festival, Aesthetica Film Festival and Norwich Film Festival.

Tom and Ross are no strangers to the awards spotlight, having won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short, the BAFTA for Best British Short Film and the IFTA for Best Short Film for An Irish Goodbye in 2023.

We're sure they'll be a strong contender for Best Short Film in Gloucester, too.

Gloucester Independent Film Festival is at Gloucester Guildhall on Saturday 5 October 2024. Tickets go on sale soon.
