Cheltenham’s Oncology Centre is looking for volunteers to help assist during scalp cooling sessions, for cancer patients hoping to keep their hair following chemotherapy.
The process, also known as a cold cap, can be used to combat chemotherapy-induced alopecia, and can help patients to maintain their confidence, and help avoid feelings of anxiety and depression.
The hospital is looking to recruit a team of volunteers to fit and remove caps, serve tea and coffee, retrieve medical notes, talk with patients and collect medication. It’s hoped volunteers would commit to working four or five hours each week within the oncology centre either weekly or fortnightly.
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says: ‘Our volunteers are valued members of our team – without them it would be impossible for us to provide our current level of service to patients, and patient care is at the heart of everything we do.’
