The University of Gloucestershire has been ranked as the most sustainable university in the UK in the People and Planet League 2019, achieving a sustainability score of over 80 per cent.
Ranking universities on policies, student development, carbon reduction and waste, People and Planet has been monitoring sustainability in universities across the country for more than a decade. The University of Gloucestershire has been dedicated to improving its sustainability throughout this time, landing a place at number two in the 2017 league table behind Manchester Metropolitan University.
The university removed all disposable cups from its refectories and coffee counters in 2018, and has now achieved zero waste to landfill and a 46 per cent reduction in its carbon emissions.
University Vice Chancellor Stephen Marston said: ‘Over the years, we have sought to integrate sustainability across all our activities – our teaching and research programmes, our student work placements, reducing carbon use across our estate, and the partnerships we create across Gloucestershire and beyond.
‘The fact that it is now our students and young people across the country who see the urgency of this agenda, and who are leading campaigning for radical change, only serves to reinforce our commitment.’
Achieving a score of 80.6 per cent, the University of Gloucestershire maintains its first-class status, which it has received in every People and Planet League to date.
