Stroud's Stratford Park Leisure Centre is being taken back over by Stroud District Council in 2024.
The leisure centre is currently run by Everyone Active, but will fall back under Stroud District Council control from Friday 1 November 2024 and be run by the council's new Leisure Services Team.
The decision was made at a Full Council meeting and will bring Stratford Park Leisure Centre in line with The Pulse in Dursley, which is run by the council.
Bringing the centre back under council control promises a variety of benefits for the local community, including working closely with the NHS and charities on preventative health and wellbeing programmes, as well as offering physical and mental health promoting activities at low or no cost.
Council leader, Catherine Braun, said: 'Our leisure services in Stroud district are all about enhancing the quality of life for residents, and this change for Stratford Park Leisure Centre gives us the opportunity to provide great facilities and services in Stroud, as we do already at The Pulse in Dursley.
'We decided to bring the Stroud leisure centre back in-house, following extensive consultation, and consideration of different operating models. There was wide support for this approach which was assessed as the best option for the community and customer experience.'
Deputy Leader, Natalie Bennett, added: 'One of the Council’s key objectives is to adopt a long-term investment plan for leisure services and facilities across the district. Running SPLC ourselves will ensure everyone has access to good quality leisure opportunities that meets their needs.'
Stratford Park Leisure Centre's facilities include an all-weather sports pitch; recently-refurbished tennis courts; squash courts; an indoor sports hall; gym; indoor swimming pool and outdoor lido; plus a sauna.
The council will protect the jobs of the 69 contracted staff at Stratford Park Leisure Centre, with their employment being transferred and protected under the Transfer of Undertakings for the Protection of Employees Regulations, alongside 30 casual staff.
