Visitors to Slimbridge Wetland Centre can experience its fascinating birds in a whole new way this summer 2021, soaking up the sights and sounds of the Living Wetland Theatre.
Seating up to 360 people, families and nature lovers can watch birds flying overhead as they learn all about Slimbridge’s feathered friends in the open-air auditorium.
From educational films to interactive live demonstrations, visitors can delve into the science behind wildlife conservation; hear all about the WWT’s leading conservation work; and discover more about each species in the spotlight. With exciting free flying demos, too.
There’ll also be chances to see researchers, scientists and TV personalities discuss urgent environmental and conservation issues during special events at the Living Wetland Theatre.
Plus, throughout the summer holidays, little animal lovers can see pelicans, crowned cranes, magpie geese and more in the Wonders of Wetlands Bird demonstrations – taking place every day at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
And after experiencing the Living Wetland Theatre, step through the portal at the back to get on a pathway through to one of the UK’s biggest open-air aviaries – Slimbridge’s new Waterscapes Aviary.
Opened as part of the Slimbridge 75 project, formerly called Slimbridge 2020, the Living Wetland Theatre is one of eight new exhibits and visitor experiences that have been made possible by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
As well as creating the design for the theatre, the team at Slimbridge has been hard at work getting a number of birds ready for the spotlight, training and practicing free flight for the live demonstrations.
There’s so much more to discover at Slimbridge, too, with families invited to explore the site in a whole new way by downloading the new interactive Wetland Heroes app and meet the world’s rarest goose at Slimbridge’s new Hawaiian-themed exhibit, Mission Possible.
And families are encouraged to share their summer wetland experiences, showing what Slimbridge means to them as part of its new #MySlimbridge campaign.
