As the curtain comes down on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, SoGlos looks back on a spectacular summer of sport — featuring gold-winning performances from Gloucestershire athletes.

The curtain came down on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games over the weekend and what an incredible summer of sport it's been.

Gloucestershire's athletes shone on the world stage and returned with Olympic glory, SoGlos gets remeniscent with a round-up of the new local sporting heros.

How many medals did Team GB win at the Paris 2024 Olympics?

Team GB had a stormer from day one, with a medal haul of 65 medals coming home to blighty.

In a mixture of colours, the country's finest athletes achieved 14 golds, 22 silvers and 29 bronzes — with most coming from the velodrome, with cyclists winning 11 medals across events.

Though it's the lowest ranking Team GB has seen since Athens 2004, the official medals table only takes into account gold medals when ordering participating countries. If the table used total medals, Team GB would end its Paris adventure sitting at number three behind China and the United States.

So how did the Gloucestershire natives do?

Four Gloucestershire athletes headed to the city of love, including Cheltenham's Flora Peel for hockey, Laura Collett for equestrian and Thomas George for rowing; and Fairford's Alex Cahoon for swimming.

MBE recipient Laura won big in the opening week of the games, winning Team GB's first gold with the rest of her eventing team made up of Rosalind Canter and Tom McEwen, who is also based at Gloucestershire's Gatcombe Estate.

She then went on to win a brilliant bronze on her horse London 52 in the individual eventing on the same day.

Alex raced in both the men's 50-metre freestyle heats and 4x100-metre freestyle relay final, but it just wasn't to be as he came in 5th place in both events — but the future remains bright for the young aquatic star, as at 21-years-old, he's got plenty of time to train for the next games.

As part of the Team GB hockey squad, Flora's chances looked good, right up until the quarter finals, where the team were beaten 3-1 by the Netherlands, leaving the medal podium just out of reach.

Finally, Thomas (left) and his long-time rowing partner Oliver Wynne-Griffith, left it all on the water in a battle to the finish line in the men's pairs final. They were pipped to the post by a Croation duo and settled for a hard-fought-for silver medal.
