Replacing what was a dreary and uninspiring entrance to the city for visitors and tourists, Gloucester’s new bus station will open on Friday 26 October 2018.
The glass-fronted station is a far cry from its predecessor, and includes digital screens providing real-time information for passengers, toilets, seating areas, and is fully accessible. The 7.5 million-pound development is also equipped with solar panels to power the station’s internal lighting.
While the official opening takes place on Friday 26 October, the station will open to the public on Saturday 27 October 2018 from 10am until 4pm. Visitors can expect to see a cavalcade of 15 vintage buses drive from Gloucester Docks across the city, to the new bus station, where they’ll remain on display until 3pm.
Paul James, the leader of Gloucester City Council, said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that we are able to announce the opening of the bus station. This is a significant milestone for us in terms of the regeneration and I believe that it sends out a message that we are determined to deliver the transformation of this part of the city.
‘I know people will be very interested to come and have a look inside so I hope they will take this opportunity to come along to our open day and see how much more welcoming, modern and efficient the new bus station is.’
The opening of the station is part of a huge regeneration of the King’s Quarter area of the city, plans for which are currently out for public consultation. The plans include a refurbishment of King’s Square and King’s Walk, to create a public space suited to events and performances.
