Marking the official start to this year’s festivities, some of the SoGlos team got to experience the sensational start of Christmas at Blenheim Palace, the day before it opened to the public – and we were thoroughly impressed.
Running from Friday 22 November 2019 to January 2020 at the historic attraction in Woodstock, just over the Oxfordshire border, Blenheim Palace’s Christmas celebration includes the decadent indoor installation, Alice in the Palace; the most impressive Illuminated Trail we have experienced around Blenheim’s parkland; as well as a Christmas market too.
Undoubtedly one of the most magical festive events in the Cotswolds, Christmas at Blenheim Palace is well worth the winter’s journey from Gloucestershire and more then justifies the admission price too.

Alice in the Palace at Blenheim Palace 2019
Glitter, gold and more top hats, keys and white rabbits than you could shake a (carrot) stick at.
Alice in the Palace was our first-time exploring Blenheim Palace’s regal rooms – and while we can imagine they would be impressive year-round, dressed with hundreds of Christmas trees, lights, baubles and exquisitely-styled fairy tale-themes, the festive trail is an utterly decadent treat.
Featuring towers of playing cards, a hall of mirrors, interactive games and plenty of Lewis Carroll’s topsy-turvy world characters, the Insta-worthy Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is an elegant highlight of Alice in the Palace and the kids enjoyed meeting the ‘real-life’ Alice too.
The Illuminated Trail at Blenheim Palace 2019
While we have enjoyed many of the popular Christmas light trails around Gloucestershire, Blenheim Palace’s Illuminated Trail is the best we have experienced yet.
Around one-mile of magical light displays plotted around Blenheim Palace’s famous parkland, it is a breath-taking after dark experience – with aerial light shows, illuminated waterfalls, colourful trees and a towering tunnel twinkling with over 100,000 pea-lights, for selfies galore.
The festive songs playing throughout really added to the atmosphere and we loved the short panto-style performance from Father Christmas and Jack Frost.

Steak frites served from a van that would rival many restaurants, lashings of mulled wine and luxury hot chocolate; a helter-skelter and traditional fairground rides; as well as row-upon-row of wooden huts selling thoughtful gift ideas, Blenheim Palace’s Christmas market is open from Friday 22 November to Sunday 15 December 2019, it’s free of charge to visit, and really adds to the experience.
