From the steep slopes of the Andes to the rolling Gloucestershire countryside, one of the most unique and affordable animal experiences in the county has just been launched – with the chance to meet and walk some of the herd at Cotswold Alpacas.
Situated on a 12-acre family-run farm in Cowley, between Cheltenham and Cirencester, the new walk with alpacas experience allows visitors to meet the gentle and naturally inquisitive creatures, find out more about the animals’ lives, as well as having the chance to lead them around the paddocks.
Run by Bridget and James Tibbs-Hamilton, Cotswold Alpacas’ herd of Huacaya alpacas was started 14 years ago and the animals are regularly handled, halter-trained and walk on a halter.
The unique creatures originally hailing from Peru have become a familiar sight on the green fields around the village of Cowley – regularly attracting daytrippers and tourists, as well as plenty of passing locals, all hoping for a photograph – with the new walks offering a chance to get up close to the animals with expert guidance.
A one-hour alpaca walk costs £20 for adults and £10 for children, available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays – with a two adult minimum booking and a maximum of six guests.
Bridget is a skilled craftsperson with more than 30 years’ experience and also offers courses on alpaca husbandry, spinning, natural hand-dyeing, felting and crochet, as well as bespoke experiences combining the alpacas and craft sessions for groups. Plus, gift vouchers are also available.
