A year-long project to regenerate one of Gloucester’s oldest churches has left one of the city’s most popular pubs hidden behind scaffolding.
But determined not to be forgotten, Café Rene has employed the artistic skills of street artist Trix to improve the hoardings while the renovation takes place.
The hoardings now represent the original Southgate of Gloucester and the arches of St Oswald’s Priory, as well as depictions of Æthelflæd, Lady of Mercia and Robert Raikes.
The work to regenerate the grade one listed St Mary de Crypt church on Southgate Street, began in April 2018.
The project, known as ‘Discover DeCrypt’ hopes to bring the building back into use as a place of worship, a community hub and a venue for culture and learning. Work is expected to be complete by March 2019.
