Composed by Gloucester-born John Stafford Smith, the iconic tune of the US national anthem will be rung out from Gloucester Cathedral’s bells on American Independence Day.

The Star-Spangled Banner will be heard across Gloucester city centre on Thursday 4 July 2019 at 11am, 12.45pm and 2pm, to remind American and British audiences of the origin of the tune and its significance to the city.

Organisers have said that the bells will serve as a taster for regular performances of the iconic tune in 2020, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America.
