Cheltenham-based tennis player, Dan Evans is making history at the US Open 2024.

British tennis player Dan Evans has made history as his grand slam against Russia's Karen Khachanov broke the record for the longest match ever played at the US Open.

The first round match lasted a gruelling five hours and 35 minutes, beating the 32-year-old US Open record of five hours and 26 minutes set in 1992.

Dan's chances of winning looked slim as by the fifth set he was down 4-0, with the deciding set presenting a mountain to climb.

To the shock of the audience — and a spectating Andy Murray who claimed all the sporting drama gave him goosebumps — Dan managed to secure a comeback, winning six game points in a row in a final set victory.

Though born in Birmingham, Dan now lives in Cheltenham and partnered Scottish sporting superstar Murray in the Paris 2024 Olympics, with the duo just missing out on medals as Andy finally bowed out of his 19-year professional career.

After the marathon match, he spoke to Sky News and simply stated: 'I just want to go to bed.'

He'll now go on to play in the second round of the US Open, at a time still to be determined on Thursday 29 August 2024, along with two other British players, Katie Boulter and Jack Draper.
