Zwings e-scooters set to leave Gloucestershire – but what's next?

Zwings may be leaving Gloucestershire but a new provider has been announced by the County Council, continuing the e-scooters trial in Gloucester and Cheltenham.

Voi Technology Ltd has been appointed as the new e-scooter provider for Cheltenham and Gloucester.

Popular e-scooter provider, Zwings, has announced it will be removing its scooters from Cheltenham and Gloucester's streets following the end of its current contract.

From Monday 31 July 2023, those across the county will no longer be able to use the two-wheeled transport, with Zwings notifying riders directly on the app regarding arrangements for any outstanding rides and passes, advising customers to use any remaining credit on their accounts before this date.

The e-scooters were initially brought in during the Covid pandemic in 2020 to support a ‘green’ restart of local travel and help with reduced public transport capacity.

But this isn't the end of this particular environmentally-friendly transport, with Gloucestershire County Council revealing that Voi Technology Ltd has been appointed as the new provider after submitting a 'strong bid in all areas, including safety, inclusivity, accessibility and for already being carbon neutral in their operation'.

Already available to rent just across the border in Bath and Bristol, an initial 10-month contract has been awarded, starting on Tuesday 1 August 2023.

The service will operate in the same way as Zwings, with Voi offering a fully accessible booking platform. This includes use of an app which you can use to register, hire, record trip data and give feedback on the experience.

Jack Samler, regional general manager for Voi UK, Ireland and France, said: 'We are very much looking forward to bringing our e-scooters to Cheltenham and Gloucester.

'As the UK’s leading shared e-scooter company, we can bring our expertise at working with local communities to provide a transport service to Gloucestershire which is safe, easy-to-use, affordable, reliable and sustainable.'
