The UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant, MKM Building Supplies, has been handed the keys to a brand new store at Kingsway Park in Gloucester by probably the county's biggest developer, Robert Hitchins Ltd.

The move marks the completion of the Boddington-based firm’s scheme to transform the 340-acre former RAF Quedgeley, with its original masterplan including 3,300 homes, a 40-acre employment site, community and leisure facilities, retail units, sports area and a primary school.

Robert Hitchins won planning permission from Gloucester City Council in 2021 for MKM’s new 20,000 square foot, two-storey building on a 1.6-acre site in Newhaven Road, which includes a yard, loading area and customer parking for 22 vehicles.

Michael Plimmer, senior development manager for Robert Hitchins Ltd, said: ‘MKM had a requirement for Gloucester and it felt like Kingsway was an ideal fit to serve the south of the city, situated just off the A38 with direct access to thousands of new homes and alongside some great complementary retailers.'

Building contractor and Gloucester firm EG Carter, a winner at the SoGlos Gloucestershire Business Awards 2021, delivered the new building on budget and ahead of time.

The MKM Building Supplies Gloucester branch is due to open in November to both the public and trade customers.

Other national brands brought to Kingsway by Robert Hitchins include ASDA, Lidl, B&M, PureGym and Greene King.
