The UK's first industry-led construction school, AccXel, has agreed a new partnership to provide training for a leading national development, building and property maintenance firm, this October 2024.
The Forest of Dean institution, which enables students to develop their skills through access to state-of-the-art real world and tech-led facilities, will deliver bespoke programmes for trainees with Wates Group, one of the UK's largest construction companies.
The Cinderford centre is one of only two UK institutions that family-run Wates has selected to deliver its training programme, with the first cohort of 65 learners enrolling there in 2024.
Wates trainees from across the country will benefit from AccXel's expert instruction and immersive learning experiences, blending theory with practical application, to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in roles across the company's diverse project portfolio.
AccXel says the partnership will also generate 'significant' inward investment for Gloucestershire, with Wates apprentices residing locally during their studies at the recently refurbished Belfry Hotel in Littledean — owned by AccXel co-founder KW Bell Group — providing a boost to the local economy and 'fostering community ties'.
Natalie King, managing director and principal of AccXel, commented: 'We are honoured to partner with Wates Group in delivering education to their apprentices.
'This collaboration reflects our shared mission to drive excellence in the sector and raise the standards of construction and built environment education.
'By developing the next generation of sector talent, we are laying the foundations for the industry’s future.'
Employing more than 4,300 people across the UK and boasting turnover of £2.18 billion in 2023, Wates Group delivers a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients, from homes, leisure facilities and schools to office buildings, hospitals and prisons.
Wates says the partnership with AccXel aligns with its broader strategy to invest in sustainable practice and skills development, ensuring that its apprentices are well-prepared to meet industry challenges while contributing to long-term growth and innovation.
Alison Reid, early careers manager at Wates Group, said: 'Partnering with AccXel ensures that our apprentices receive top-tier education that meets the evolving demands of our business and our industry.
'This partnership is a vital part of our long-term commitment to nurturing talent and providing our teams with the skills they need to lead Wates into the future.'
