International real estate firm Avison Young has been appointed by Cheltenham Borough Council to facilitate the sale of its iconic Municipal Offices in the town centre.
A significant step toward the sale of the building on the open market, the agent will develop a marketing strategy to encourage development which benefits its surroundings and the wider town.
The council approved plans to sell the building — at which it has been based for more than 100 years — in July last year, having agreed that a rise in home working meant the offices were no longer appropriate for council use.
Councillor Rowena Hay, leader of the council, commented: 'The Municipal Offices is a beautiful building and our ambition is to preserve it in all its glory.
'We are absolutely committed to safeguard it, respect the heritage of its setting, while taking every opportunity offered by modern architecture, technology and new building materials.
'This will allow a development that improves its surroundings and creates space for future use, leaving an appropriate legacy.'
The marketing strategy from Avison Young will aim to reflect market conditions, potential purchasers and the local economy whilst also taking into account stakeholder engagement and consultation.
Once completed, the strategy will be considered by councillors prior to the building being put on the market.
It is expected that any sale will take between two and three years to complete, with the council continuing to occupy the space alongside short-term tenants in that time.
Gordon Isgrove, principal at Avison Young added: 'This is a truly special building and for prospective purchasers, it represents an exceptional opportunity in the heart of Cheltenham and adjoining the main retail pitch.
'We are anticipating strong interest from developers who are looking to create a very special development that benefits from this unique position.'
