As part of the national We Make Events #lightinred campaign, protestors will be gathering outside Cheltenham Town Hall on Wednesday 30 September 2020 – with business owners, employees and freelancers from the live events industry gathering for a socially distanced demonstration.
Taking place outside Cheltenham Town Hall from 8pm to 8.30pm, participants will stand still and silent, with the MP for Cheltenham, Alex Chalk, also due to be attending.
Gloucestershire-based event organisers, Oasis Events, hopes the demonstration will highlight the wealth of talent across the live events sector and call on the government to provide urgently needed financial support, following the forced shutdown of live entertainment due to the Coronavirus crisis.
Dany Fremantle from Oasis Events, said: ‘We rely on a huge network of local suppliers to create events for our business and private clients. They are all viable businesses, which will bounce back when restrictions can be loosened, and which employ thousands in the rural economy… the shiny and glamorous events you see on social media are the end product of an army of ordinary people whose livelihoods are at risk.
‘Gloucestershire has been identified as one of the nine counties in the UK to be worst affected by the shutdown of leisure, hospitality and events businesses due to its reliance on these sectors for employment, and we want to do what we can to support and bring national attention to the issues.’
Anyone is welcome to attend the demonstration, with attendees reminded to wear a mask or face covering and maintain social distancing at all times.
