Boasting more than just a room full of weights and machines, Tewkesbury Park’s state-of-the-art health club puts its clients’ wellbeing at the top of its priorities.
Speaking to SoGlos about what the venue can offer to help with your overall health, Martin Brammer, health club manager at Tewkesbury Park, explained why joining a health club could be far more beneficial than a gym, if you’re looking to relax, unwind and get fit.

What facilities can people enjoy at Tewkesbury Park’s health club?
We’re very lucky in what we’ve got here. There’s a fully equipped ‘Life Fitness’ gym, with top-of-the-range cardiovascular equipment, alongside resistance machines. We also have a free weight and body weight area; dedicated spin studio with ‘Matrix’ bikes in it; and a studio where we offer a small selection of fitness classes. Then we’ve got a heated pool, a sauna, steam room, and outdoor hot tub. We’re lucky enough to have one of the few remaining squash courts in the area, as well tennis courts.
Working with the golf team, we also run successful nine and 18 hole golf courses that offer a nice alternative for those wishing to spend more time outside.
Are there any plans to expand further?
We have a brand-new Scandinavian sauna for our garden area, next to the outdoor hot tub. We decided it was time that our existing sauna had a revamp, but instead of closing it completely, we thought we’d install a barrel style sauna on the patio, which gives members something a bit different to enjoy, and another way to relax.
What are the benefits of choosing a health club over a gym?
It’s not about coming to the gym just to get fit, it’s also about coming to relax, see your friends, socialise, and ultimately looking after your own wellbeing. It’s really important.
What I like about the membership group here is that they’re quite a close community. Everyone knows each other once they join, and it gives people the opportunity to socialise while they unwind, and gives them an extra level of support if they’re working out.
While the relaxation sounds amazing, can Tewkesbury Park still help people towards fitness goals?
We have a range of classes from spin if you like high intensity, we also have aerobics, step classes, and one called functional fitness which is like the starting point for cross fit and how to use your body properly.
We will always tailor exercise programmes to suit people’s needs in the gym too. Often that could be following doctors’ orders to help recovery after an injury, or improve general fitness. We build close relationships with our members so they can achieve everything they need to, and it’s lovely to see people gain in confidence, too.
We’ve got somebody who considered themselves to be overweight, and they’ve come so far with our support, they’re now challenging themselves to do more outside of the club. We have a few members who’ve come to us and gained such huge confidence from hitting those targets.
Why is it so important for people to embrace their wellbeing, and not just work out?
You can’t get fit without being relaxed – one doesn’t work well without the other. You have to be in the right mindset to want to come to the gym in the first place, so if you’re not in that positive frame of mind, you’ll never feel driven enough to achieve your goals.
Relaxing and de-stressing first can allow you to move towards your goals, whether that is fitness, recovering from an injury, or improving your mental health, having that opportunity to switch off and relax is essential.
Who uses your facilities, and who would you like to see joining?
Membership at Tewkesbury Park offers access to the whole club, and the amount you pay depends on how often you want to use the facilities, be that the pool, playing squash or using the gym.
We’re open to anyone of any age, that wants to enjoy the best of both worlds. Having the opportunity to relax and enjoy state-of-the-art facilities is a huge benefit in comparison to a monthly gym membership, and we welcome anyone to give us a try.
