From show-stopping parties and concerts to business meetings and unforgettable weddings, Stroud's vibrant community arts centre, The Sub Rooms, has a wonderful selection of spaces to hire for private events — no matter the occasion.
Accommodating as few as two people or as many as 500, SoGlos rounds up nine great reasons to choose the Sub Rooms for your next venue hire.
Weddings at The Sub Rooms
Widely known for its Georgian architecture, art-deco bar and timeless interior decor, this stunning building provides a memorable setting in which to conduct your wedding ceremony and dinner or to host a drinks reception for your guests — the perfect venue to put your stamp on, whether you're looking for something funky and alternative or a more traditional setup.
Ceremonies take place in the iconic Ballroom with its high ceilings, grand chandeliers and magnificent views from the balcony terrace. This is also where the receptions take place, with the option of using the George Room for smaller drinks receptions.
Business events at The Sub Rooms
From its beautiful Regency-style rooms featuring floor to ceiling windows and more intimate but airy meeting spaces to its wide open forecourt, the indoor and outdoor spaces at The Sub Rooms offer guests plenty of flexibility for any business event.
With six different rooms and spaces available to choose from, The Sub Rooms can accommodate parties big and small, catering from anywhere between two to 500 delegates — whether you're hosting a conference, intimate meeting, a training day, or even a charity gala.
Gigs at The Sub Rooms
If you're looking for a venue to debut your latest tracks, or perhaps celebrating the anniversary of an album, The Sub Rooms is a great choice of venue, having played host to a number of incredible acts over the years including The Beatles, The Kinks, KT Tunstall, Squeeze and The Shires.
The Ballroom has been acoustically treated to ensure that the sound matches the beautiful surroundings and houses a state of the art D&B audio sound system, with rentals including PA hire with a sound technician; box office, building staff and ticketing; two dressing rooms with private bathroom; as well as a marketing package, featuring a website and a social media listing — there's even a sprung maple dance floor!
Film screenings at The Sub Rooms
What can be hosted within the 200-year-old building is almost limitless — with film screenings presenting just one of those options.
Whether you're looking for a venue to host a launch party screening of your new movie or want to get your nearest and dearest together for your birthday to watch your favourite flick, there's options suitable for everyone.
Art exhibitions at The Sub Rooms
If you're looking for a space to exhibit works of art, The George Room, situated at the front of the building on the ground floor, lends itself as a unique backdrop to do so.
While not taking away from the art itself, the space offers itself as a blank canvas with subtle Georgian features such as large windows and high ceilings, ideal for showcasing any collection, from carefully curated sculpture to intricately detailed paintings.
Technical facilities at The Sub Rooms
The Sub Rooms offers excellent technical facilities, which includes front of house PA systems, microphones, monitors and lighting, perfect for any get together, whether you're hosting a DJ set or orchestrating a conference.

Bespoke catering at The Sub Rooms
The Sub Rooms offers guests a variety of catering options, tailored to their specific needs and events. From simple tea, coffee and cake through to cold buffets — or even three-course dinners and lunches.
All food is prepared fresh on-site by The Sub Rooms' in-house chef, who can create bespoke menus as well as advise on and supply wines from local suppliers.
It's accessible
The Sub Rooms welcomes all guests and does its best to cater to all ranges of accessibility.
The venue has level or ramped access to the front of the building; a lift to the Ballroom; adapted toilets on the ground floor, which also feature a changing table; as well as parking for Blue Badge Holders close by. What's more, there is also a hearing loop — an assistive listening technology for individuals with reduced ranges of hearing — in the Ballroom and the George Room.
It's a registered charity
Originally built in 1833 by public subscription, the venue is now run as an independent, charitable organisation with the local community still central to its ethos.
All funds raised at The Sub Rooms go back into helping the community hub to broaden arts and culture so they become intertwined within the lives of visitors; create opportunities for skills and career progression in the creative industries; ensure that people from every background are welcome at The Sub Rooms and are encouraged to deepen their relationship with arts and culture; and much more.
Community and charity rates are available upon request.
