Horse lovers and racing enthusiasts are in luck this September, as National Racehorse Week celebrates the much-loved gentle giants by offering the chance to visit some of Gloucestershire's most prestigious racing yards, stud farms and retraining centres.
From Saturday 7 until Sunday 15 September 2024, visitors can meet powerful racehorses, show some love to those who have retired and tour the yards and stables that are exclusively open to the public for this limited time.
There's also the chance to check out some live demonstrations, including the opportunity to see how racehorses are physically fine-tuned through sessions from an equine chiropractor, physiotherapist and vet; as well as how equipment such as water treadmills and swimming pools are used to keep the animals moving their best — with the chance to see a farrier at work, too.
Those who book may also be able to try out some cool equestrian technology with a ride on a mechanical horse!
Gloucestershire stable owners taking part include Charlie Longsdon in Chipping Norton, who's successfully trained more than 600 winners; Cheltenham's Kim Bailey, who's 1400 winners include the 'Big Three' made up of The Grand National, The Gold Cup and The Champion Hurdle.
Other owners include, Ben Pauling's state-of-the-art yard at Naunton Downs Estate in Cheltenham; and Moreton-in-Marsh's Martin Keighley and Richard Phillips who have both raised and trained numerous winners in the sport.
ITV Racing presenter and Gloucestershire native, Chris Hughes, said: 'I have always been a massive fan of racehorses and this week is very much about connecting people and families to the horses and giving them a chance to meet these equine stars.'
Each stable and yard has a limited capacity for visitors, so booking is essential, with slots available on the National Racehorse Week website.
Craving more racing action? There's not long to wait as the new season at Cheltenham Racecourse kicks off with The Showcase in October 2024.
