Hungry history lovers are in for a real treat as Berkeley Castle presents an exclusive afternoon tea experience with a fascinating historical twist on Thursday 28 September 2023.

Guests can dine in style, tucking into an afternoon tea of sweet and savoury sweets prepared by Napier Catering — served with Champagne to raise a toast in the atmospheric Great Hall.

The experience also includes a guided tour of Berkeley Castle, led by one of its most experienced and knowledgeable guides, and a fascinating encounter with Countess Mary Cole.

Cole, who is an important figure in medieval fortress's illustrious history, became countess of the estate in 1796 — rising through the social ranks in true 'rags to riches' style as the daughter of a butcher.

Guests will get to meet her and learn all about her scandalous story, including how she was shunned by Regency Britain's high society and even fell out of favour with King George III and Queen Charlotte.

Tickets to Berkeley Castle's Champagne Afternoon Tea with Mary Cole must be booked online via berkeley-castle.com/champagne-afternoon-tea.
