A firm Cheltenham-favourite, the Holst Birthplace Museum will be bringing history to life during its Victorian Easter Festival on Tuesday 9, Tuesday 16, Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 April 2019.
As well as aiming to celebrate the life and work of Gustav Holst, Cheltenham-born composer of ‘The Planets’, the museum also offers an incredible insight into domestic life at the end of the 19th century.
Whether you are a history buff, crafter or cook, the Victorian Easter Festival offers sessions for everyone. With lots to entertain younger visitors, including craft sessions and interactive exhibits, the festival also provides a good excuse for the whole family to get together over the Easter holidays.
Bake Back in Time at the Holst Birthplace Museum
Visitors can get to grips with Victorian cooking on Saturday 6 April 2019 in a 19th century working kitchen, complete with iron range and other contemporary cooking instruments. The museum’s resident cook will be making traditional Easter fares such as Easter biscuits and hot cross buns for visitors to drop in and try between 11am and 3pm.
Children’s Craft Drop in at the Holst Birthplace Museum
Perfect for keeping the children busy over the Easter holidays, the festival line-up includes two craft drop-in sessions. The Spring Hares session will run on Tuesday 9 April 2019 and offers the chance to create a spring hare with tissue and card. The Easter Baskets session on Tuesday 16 April 2019 is the perfect chance to create an Easter basket to store some chocolate eggs. Both sessions run between 11am and 3pm.
A Victorian Spring Clean at the Holst Birthplace Museum
Get spring cleaning inspiration and learn how Victorians coped without modern cleaning technology on Monday 22 April 2019. With the current cleaning craze in mind, curator Laura Kinnear will introduce concoctions such as carbolic soap and sulphurous acid gas in two half-hour talks at 11am and 12pm in the museum’s basement.
Victorian Posies at the Holst Birthplace Museum
Florist Katherine Kear will lead a special Victorian Posies session in the museum kitchen on Tuesday 23 April 2019 between 2.30pm and 4pm. Inspiration for a Victorian creation will be all around as museum entry, as well as material and refreshments, is included in the workshop price.
