Experience the unique atmosphere of Tewkesbury Abbey when the inspiring 'Peace Doves' exhibition by the internationally acclaimed sculptor Peter Walker together with 'Imagine Peace' by Luxmuralis offer a moving and unforgettable experience, this February 2025.
Inviting visitors to carry the ideals of peace forward, this mass-participation artwork is created with around 8,000 individually handmade paper doves which are suspended on ribbon, filling the Abbey's iconic nave.
Collaborating with community partner The Roses Theatre to engage the local community, each bird contains a message of peace, love and joy written by local venues, schools and groups which have been invited to participate in the project.
At sunset, 'Imagine Peace' by Luxmuralis transforms part of the abbey into a sanctuary of quiet reflection, as the installation is bathed in gentle, evocative lighting, illuminating the flock and architecture in powerful visuals that inspire reflection on unity and global harmony, adding to its rousing presence.
Plus, the artwork will be accompanied by a specially curated soundscape by composer, David Harper.
The reverend canon Nick Davies, of Tewkesbury Abbey, said: 'Tewkesbury Abbey has been a place of peace and sanctuary for generations, including during the Wars of the Roses when defeated Lancastrians retreated to the Abbey. In a hectic and uncertain 21st century, many of us are looking for peace, whether it be as we watch the news, think about our community or our own need for inner peace.
'I'm really looking forward to this installation and I'm excited by the partnership we've developed with so many different community groups across the town and beyond. My hope is that as people participate and reflect, they will have an opportunity to find peace and to recommit themselves to being peacemakers for our communities and our world.'
Taking place in the evening from Saturday 1 to Thursday 27 February 2025, tickets cost £9 for adults and £6.50 for children aged four to 17 years old — while children under three can go along for free.
Sensory-friendly sessions are also available on Wednesday 5, 19 and 26 February 2025 between 5pm and 6pm, featuring lower noise levels, dimmed lighting and designated quiet spaces.
