Discover your inner gladiator at Chedworth Roman Villa this Father's Day weekend

As part of its 100th-year centenary celebrations with the National Trust, Chedworth Roman Villa is channeling the energy of Ancient Rome, as a Father's Day event sees the villa put on the ultimate gladiator show, in June 2024.

To mark a centenary of care under the National Trust, Chedworth Roman Villa is putting on an extra special Father's Day event this June.

Roman reenactors, Legio Il Augusta, have their shields at the ready for this popular summer show, which has become somewhat of a Father's Day tradition at the Roman villa.

The performances include exciting military demonstrations as well as the opportunity to find out more about the Roman fighters in action, through their 'ultimate gladiator' show.

The main performances will take place at 11am and 2.30pm each day, with an extra 'surprise' show around lunchtime.

Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the Roman experience by enrolling at 'gladiator school' to boost fighting skills; inspecting Roman armour and equipment; and dressing up and chatting with the mighty gladiators themselves between shows.

And on Father's Day, families can also take part in the traditional fun 'combat' against the dads after each of the shows, to put their gladiator skills to the test!

Lead gladiatrix, Alisa Vanlint, said: 'We are honoured to be heading back to Chedworth during the villa’s centenary year. We have been practicing harder than ever to raise the bar for this special occasion.

'Families can look forward to incredible gladiator shows — and we have a few surprises up our sleeves as well.'

To fuel gladiator appetites, visitors can bring along picnics or purchase treats from the cafe. And for those looking for more history between shows, visit the Roman villa to view its spectacular mosaics and bath houses.

The event is free, but normal admission charges to the site apply. Entry to the villa is between 10am and 4.30pm, daily. See the Chedworth website for more details.
