Dean Heritage Centre is reopening its museum and grounds on Thursday 13 August 2020, welcoming families back to explore the Forest of Dean cultural hub for the first time in months.
While Dean Heritage Centre’s Gruffalo Trail has been open for a few weeks now – and has proven exceptionally popular – it is the first time since lockdown restrictions began that families can take advantage of its museum attractions and full grounds.
Spanning five onsite galleries, the museum boasts an extensive collection of Forest of Dean artefacts, from prehistoric tools to coal mining equipment, as well as interactive exhibits and outdoor displays.
Little ones can step back in time, playing old fashioned playground games at the Victorian classroom or peering into the free mine, an authentic replica of a traditional Forest of Dean colliery.
There’s also five acres of forest to explore, including the woodland trail inspired by the beloved Gruffalo, families will be able to enjoy a packed socially distanced day out.
The coffee shop is open for takeaways to enjoy in the picturesque grounds, with pre-booked homemade picnics, ploughman’s and afternoon teas available to order in advance. Plus, on Wednesday 12, Wednesday 19 and Wednesday 26 August 2020, as well as bank holiday Monday 31 August 2020, the already very reasonable picnics and afternoon teas will be half-price for adults and children, thanks to the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.
Dean Heritage Centre is open from Wednesday to Sunday during August 2020, with no advance booking required. The playground and craft hut remain closed for now.
