Exploring cultural, social and political issues through clay, Welcome To My World: ceramics with narrative is the first exhibition of its kind in the UK - and it's at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester from Saturday 13 August to Saturday 15 October 2022.
Originally commissioned by The Burton at Bideford Art Gallery and Museum, the touring exhibition features work from 35 contemporary artists and tells a variety of important, untold stories through commonplace objects, promising to be a thought-provoking and challenging experience.
Exhibiting artists include Srinia Chowdhury and Mac Star McCusker, who address gender bias and inequality; Matt Smith, who explores LGBTQ+ representation in art history; Nala Turner, who aims to redefine the Black feminine; and Ingram prize winner Connor Coulston.
Other themes explored in the exhibition include the impact of technological consumerism; the rise in the cult of celebrity; slavery; and political unrest in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, all told through the medium of contemporary ceramics - with works interspersed with selected pieces from The Burton's collection of North Devon slipware pottery.
Curated by Nick Duxbury, each piece tells a powerful, personal, yet universally significant story, with each artist inhabiting their own stylistic world, and asks viewers to step outside of their own world and wander through the artists'.
Welcome To My World: ceramics with narrative is at New Brewery Arts from Saturday 13 August to Saturday 15 October 2022 and is free to visit.
