Every year on Whit Sunday evening, the traditional Bread and Cheese Scramble takes place at St. Briavels in Lydney, after evensong in the church.
On Sunday 9 June 2019, crowds will gather with hopes of catching squares of cheese and lumps of bread which are thrown from high atop the church wall, in this bizarre but bemusing event.
There is some disagreement amongst legends as to when this tradition began, with records stating between the twelfth century to the late 1700’s, and the morsels are said to bring good luck- if caught.
