Art in the City is back in Gloucester this August 2024, with cash prizes available for plein air artworks created in a day.

Gloucestershire artists have the chance to win cash prizes on Saturday 17 August 2024, as Art in the City returns to Gloucester for a day of plein air painting.

With its imposing architecture, rich history and surprising hidden spaces, Gloucester has plenty of inspiration for artists — and with prizes of up to £500 up for grabs, Art in the City encourages everyone to get involved, from professional painters to amateurs and even first-timers.

There are two competitions to take part in — the Plein Air Competition for adults and the Family Competition, which creative kids can get involved in.

The Plein Air Competition has three cash prizes of £100 for third place, £150 for second place and £500 for first place, with the winning works exhibited at Gloucester Framing.

There are also two additional £25 art materials vouchers for highly commended entries.

This competition is being judged by Tushar Sabale, Jane Clatworthy and local artists Sarah Darby and Russell Haines.

While Gloucester artist Lisa Turner and Julie Kent MBE are judging the family competition — with prizes available for winning entries in this category, too.

Artists working in oils, watercolours, acrylic, pastels, pen and ink, lino cuts and mixed media are welcome to enter, as long as the finished artwork is created in one day — but the competition does not accept photography.

Registration opens at 9am on Saturday 17 August 2024 at St Nicholas Church on Westgate Street.
