Gloucestershire residents are being encouraged to keep hold of their damaged goods, with the chance to get their well-loved belongings mended for free, or for the cost of the materials used, at one of the county’s new repair cafés.
Helping locals to mend their well-loved belongings, repair cafés have been set up across the county, at venues in Cheltenham, Cirencester, Newent and many more locations.
Volunteers will be on hand to assist with all kinds of mends and repairs – including small electronics, such as toasters and kettles, toys, vacuums, clothing and much more – for free, with small donations towards the materials and running costs welcomed.
What’s more, visitors can even grab a slice of homemade cake and a hot drink to enjoy while the repairs are underway.
The movement was established in the county over five years ago to encourage people in Gloucestershire to fix the items they have, rather than replacing them, which helps to reduce the volume of raw materials and energy needed to make new products, alongside cutting CO2 emissions.
It’s hoped that the initiative will inspire enthusiasm for a more sustainable society, teaching people that repairing items can be both fun and inexpensive; increasing the longevity of their belongings; and giving volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills.
