Try Caving at Clearwell Caves
9 August – Give caving in the Forest of Dean a go this summer holidays, when Clearwell Caves hold their Try Caving taster sessions.
If you’ve always wanted to give caving a go but never got round to trying the sport, now’s your chance when Clearwell Caves near Coleford holds special deep-level visits into its mine this August – giving avid-explorers the chance to go off the public highways and experience the mine just as the miners left it centuries ago.
One session during the school summer holidays, on Saturday 9 August 2008, starts at 2pm. Taking participants down to around 200ft underground, complete with plenty of crawling and scrambling, cavers will get to see fascinating workings and where iron ore and ochre has been mined for centuries, as well as passing through the ‘Rabbit Run’, seeing the ‘Football Roof’ and possibly trying out the ‘Mouse Hole’.
Organisers recommend wearing old clothes – which you won’t mind getting dirty. Some wellies are available if you don’t have your own, and helmets and caplamps are supplied.
All of the activities are suitable for reasonably able-bodied people aged 7 and above, however, contact Clearwell Caves on (01594) 832535 if you have any questions. Be prepared to get dirty, get on your hands and knees and have fun at this popular Forest of Dean attraction.
