Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital says the new robotic assisted technology will bring big benefits in medical care.

Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital has launched a new service of robotic assisted knee replacement this December 2024.

The fresh form of orthopaedic surgery uses a robotic arm to assist consultants performing a total knee replacement.

Exciting plans for the new service have been in the works for 18 months. The new launch this month is the result of a huge team effort from the consultants, theatre team and senior management team, along with the Johnson & Johnson innovative medicine team who have guided Nuffield's team every step of the way.

As the only private hospital in Gloucestershire offering patients this state-of-the-art technology, the Nuffield team completed a very successful first case last week.

The team says there are many benefits of robotic assisted technology in medical care. These can include reduced pain post-op, allowing patients to get back on their feet much quicker.

With robotic precision there can be better accuracy of the implant placement, resulting in soft tissue preservation, which speeds up patients' recovery.

After a successful procedure, the use of the robotic arm can mean a reduced length of hospital stay, allowing patients to get home to loved ones more quickly.

Hospital director Rob Thomas said: 'We’re proud to be entering a new era of orthopaedic services here at the Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital.

'A lot of work has gone in to getting this technology up and running for our patients, and consultants, to enhance our services further, and improve our surgical outcomes.

'Furthermore, we’re delighted Navraj Atwal, Alexander Dodds, Harminder Gosal and Jonathan Mutimer are launching the robot here.'
